Addiction Medicine Services (AMS) at WPIC

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major health problem affecting a significant portion of the population. These disorders are associated with psychiatric, medical, family and social problems, creating suffering for the individual, a burden for the family, and affecting every fabric of society. For many individuals, addiction is a chronic disease that complicates recovery from psychiatric disorders and other medical problems.

AMS provides an extensive continuum of care with hospital-based, rehab-based and ambulatory detoxification, short and long-term residential rehabilitation, partial hospital, intensive outpatient and outpatient programs. Many specialty services are offered as well including a Narcotic Addiction Treatment Program, a Perinatal Addiction Center, several programs for individuals with all types and severity of psychiatric co-morbidity, a program for inner city residents and a program for clients involved in the criminal justice system.

WPIC was one of the first systems in the country to develop “integrated” services for patients with SUDs and psychiatric illness. Several inpatient units and many of AMS’ ambulatory programs offer these services. Many other treatment systems in the U.S. and other countries have adapted integrated models of care developed in AMS.

Community Linkages and Research AMS works closely with many community providers on outcome projects and clinical trials. As part of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network, AMS has developed a regional infrastructure involving partners from the tri-state area to conduct multi-site clinical trials.

Dissemination to Clients and Families

AMS faculty and staff have published many papers, books and treatment manuals for professionals on the treatment of addiction, HIV, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Faculty and staff have also published numerous recovery materials for patients and families. These recovery workbooks and journals are used in many treatment programs in the U.S. and other countries, and some have been translated to foreign languages.

The Training Environment

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Psychiatry offers an extremely rich clinical , research and teaching environment to promote Addiction Medicine. Over the past 20 years, the Department of Psychiatry has contributed to the growth of Addiction Medicine, which now offers over 20 clinical and prevention programs in over 9 locations throughout the area. AMS has grown considerably during this time and has integrated treatment and prevention programs in multiple medical, psychiatric and community settings.

AMS works closely with other UPMC hospitals and community agencies to provide consultation and training on issues related to substance use disorders and co-occurring medical and psychiatric disorders. Each year, faculty and staff of AMS provide a large array of clinical training workshops to the medical center and community. Dr. Douaihy and AMS and WPIC colleagues have established assessment and treatment protocols to facilitate detoxification and stabilization of addicted patients seen in a variety of medical or psychiatric settings.
