Educational
Objectives:
The participant should be able to (1) recognize
the unique cultural values, beliefs and practices
that emerge in the clinical encounter (2) learn how
to be more sensitive and aware of the patient’s
culture and background to better formulate a
diagnosis and (3) individualize diagnosis and
treatment to optimize care.
Summary:
Cultural misunderstandings between the patient
and clinician prevent patients from diverse cultures
to access and utilize medical care. This workshop
emphasizes the importance of providing culturally
competent care using cultural assessment as an
integral part of a comprehensive assessment that
includes physical, psychosocial and functional
components. This workshop will also discuss the
obstacles such as language and other cultural
barriers that could interfere with treatment. This
workshop also will focus on the difficulties of
formulating a diagnosis due to variation in
symptomalogy, difficulty with establishing
therapeutic alliance, and treatment challenges
involving psychotherapy and pharmacologic
interventions. Using such an assessment, the
clinician can develop an individualized care plan
that honors the patient’s culture and lifestyle.
By the end of the workshop, the participants will
be able to: (1) identify cultural barriers to
treatment and create an ongoing dialogue and
exchange between healthcare professionals and a
diverse community, (2) integrate cultural needs into
a diagnosis, and (3) formulate a culturally
competent treatment to enhance quality of care.
