Mikhil Bamne, PhD
Mikhil is a geneticist who has recently joined our lab, and his  focus is analysis of gene expression.

Triptish Bhatia, PhD
Sr. Project Coordinator - Dr. Bhatia is a psychologist and has extensive experience in research in India. She is responsible for coordinating the Indian chapter of this project.  In addition she trains the new research staff in ascertainment and interviews of families for the research in India.

Triptish is currently here in the U.S. engaged in a training program.

Kay Bornemann
Kay has recently joined our group as a recruiter in Cincinnati.

Daniel Brace
Daniel is a graduate student who recently joined our group as an interviewer in Pittsburgh.

Cathy Cortese
Administrative Assistant - Having a degree in Business Administration from Robert Morris College and an interest in psychology, Cathy came to Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic's Research Department. Her time is spent primarily in word processing, but she also handles a number of other clerical and administrative duties.

Kodavali V. Chowdari, PhD
Chowdari joined our group several years ago to manage our genetics lab.  He came here as a post-doc from India and currently focuses on candidate gene research in the schizophrenia genetics project.

Sue Clifton
Sue is the project coordinator for the STEP-BD genetics study.  This study is being conducted in collaboration with the Main STEP-BD study.  For questions regarding the main STEP-BD treatment study go to http://www.stepbd.org/ . You can contact Sue about the genetics branch of the study.

Smita N Deshpande, MD, DPM
Dr. Deshpande is a Senior Psychiatrist with the Government of India. Dr Deshpande trained at the Universities of Nagpur, Bombay and at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (New Delhi). She is interested in the etiology of psychoses in India. She is the principle Indian collaborator.

Kelly Dillon
Kelly has joined our group as a clinical interviewer in our studies of schizophrenia.

Joseph Eaton, PhD
Dr. Eaton is a Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, in the field of Economic and Social Development and Sociology. He has conducted pioneering studies among the Hutterites and is actively involved in this field. He is a consultant for the present project.

Frank Fleischer
Frank has recently joined our group as a recruiter in Pennsylvania.

Rohan Ganguli, M.D.
Dr. Ganguli is a professor of Psychology and Pathology and is the Director of the Schizophrenia Research and Treatment Center. he is interested in the causes and treatment of schizophrenia and is a co-investigator in the current project.

Tom Horner, MS
Tom works as a data technician, and has been a valued member of our data team for a number of years.

Fran Lokar, RN
Fran is a Registered Nurse working as a recruiter for the study.

Kelly Macko
Kelly is a clinical interviewer whose primary focus is with our various projects dealing with bipolar disorder, including the STEP-BD genetics study and the newly instituted MHIRC DNA repository.

Mary Maendel
Mary is a member of the Hutterite community, based at the Fairholme Colony, Portage L'Prairie, Manitoba. She assists Selma Maendel with ascertainment of participants and with database management.

Selma Maendel
Selma is a member of the Hutterite community, based at the Fairholme Colony, Portage L'Prairie, Manitoba. She is the principle collaborator for the studies among the Hutterites. She is responsible for ascertainment of participants and for database management.

Hader Mansour, M.D.
Hader is a psychiatrist and visiting scholar from  Egypt, and is working with us in our lab in preparation for beginning genetics research in Egypt.  His current projects include assessing the role of circadian rhythm genes and phenotypes in bipolar disorder.

Mary K. Miller, L.P.N.
Recruitment Specialist - Mary became interested in our research because she has a family member with a mental illness. Previously she was one of 7 VISTA workers assigned to Spencer State Hospital for a one-year term. Mary volunteers at the medical library at St. Joseph's Hospital and is an officer in the ParentShare organization.

Vishwajit L. Nimgaonkar, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Nimgaonkar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Genetics. Dr. Nimgaonkar received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Madras, and performed his residencies in Psychiatry at the University of London and the University of Pittsburgh. He leads the research team.

Abby Northup
Abby has recently joined our lab as a laboratory technician, and will be working with Travis in handling samples, as well as pursuing individual projects.

Rachel Petersen
Rachel is a University of Pittsburgh student who has recently joined our group.  Her primary focus is quality control of clinical data.

Lora Pless
Lora is a Laboratory technician, her main work include handling of samples and DNA extraction, as well as genotyping.

Michael Pogue-Geile, Ph.D.
Dr. Pogue-Geile is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Pitt. he is interested in causes of schizophrenia, and is collaborating with regard to the neuropsychological tests for this project.

Patrick Reitz, M.A.
Research Coordinator - Before joining the schizophrenia research project, Patrick worked extensively with the mentally ill in Pittsburgh as the director of a large homeless shelter. He is currently the research coordinator for this project.

Karol Rosengarth
Karol recently joined our group as an administrative assistant.  She also works with our friends and collaborators in Matcheri Keshavan's group at WPIC.

Cynthia Ruglovsky
Cynthia has recently joined our group as a clinical interviewer in our studies of bipolar disorder.

Todd Schoeni
Todd is a clinical interviewer in our schizophrenia studies, as well as helping to coordinate the PAARTNERS study.

Brian Shirts
Brian is an M.D./Ph.D. student in our lab, and is curently working on projects relating to gene environment interactions with, with a focus on exposure to infectious agents.

Michael Talkowski 
Michael is starting graduate work in human genetics, and is working towards a Ph.D. His current projects include Meta analysis of research into the RGS4 gene, and the possible role of dopaminergic genes in schizophrenia.

Sarah Tarbox
Sarah has recently joined our group as a clinical interviewer in our schizophrenia studys, and is a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology at the University of Pittsburgh.

Monisha Tarneja, MPH
Monisha is the project coordinator for our Indo-US psychiatric genetics projects in India as well as the liaison for our UK project. She joined our group as a clinical interviewer and has 8 years of clinical experience from her work at the Long Term Structured Residence of WPIC. She worked with chronically ill adult psychiatric clients in a clinical, administrative, and psychotherapeutic capacity and was a supervisor to the residential advisors.

Govner Thorp
Clinical Research Specialist - Govner has been a research associate studying mental illness among the homeless population of Allegheny County. He has also worked as a homeless case manager and a psychiatric case manager in a general psychiatric clinic.

Joel Wood
Joel is the computer and data coodinator for the project. He designs database applications, handles the hardware and software needs of the main study staff, and shares in the clinical and laboratory data analysis responsibilities. He is also the designer and administrator of this site.
